Norilsk Nickel to close plant in Taimyr

During the 9th Krasnoyarsk Economic Forum, Norilsk Nickel’s deputy general director for cooperation with government agencies and the investment community Andrei Burgov noted that Taimyr ecological issues and upgrade of enterprises of Norilsk Nickel’s Zapolyarny subsidiary are two inextricably connected processes.

“The closure of the nickel plant is ecological problem solving. The first smelting was made at the plant in 1939. It reached its full capacity in 1942. The service life of the enterprise is over, it was a very long period. If we work quickly, the plant will be closed by 2017. This is the most cardinal structure manoeuvre, which will be made by the company for all time of its existence. Decision to close the plant wasn’t easy, but it’s not reasonable to upgrade the old enterprise. The volume of sulfur emissions from this enterprise, which is located within the city boundaries, is 400 thousand tons per year, - Andrei Bugrov emphasized. –
