Expenditure for putting European nuclear power plants out of operation to exceed 250 bln euro until 2050

The putting European nuclear power plants out of operation until 2050 will require over 250 bln euro, the EU Commission assessed, AFP agency reports referring to the project of the Nuclear Illustrative Programme.

This is the first report made after the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan in 2011.

Brussels thinks that 123 bln euro is required so as to put out of operation the nuclear power plants and another 130 bln euro to process and bury nuclear waste.

According to AFP, this amount might be reconsidered in case of prolongation of the period of operation of nuclear power plants as many EU countries intend for that.

The world experience of putting out of operation of nuclear power plants is quite limited. As of October 2015 there were 89 shutdown reactors in Europe, but only 3 reactors have been fully put out of operation until now, and all 3 in Germany.

According to the EU Commission, the reduction of capacities of nuclear power plants is expected by 2025, a new rise – by 2030.
