BAZ will continue operation despite problems

The management of the West aluminum division of UC Rusal have held the meeting with the staff of the Bogoslovsky aluminum plant (BAZ). The CEO of the West aluminum division, A. Arnautov states that since January 1 2013, the energy tariff was reduced for the 6th electrolysis series, not for the whole plant as the company expected before. Tariffs for the other shops even increased. Mr. Arnautov says that it makes aluminum production at BAZ economically unsustainable. In connection with that, the management has performed the following measures. Firstly, they began realization of the project for upgrade of casting shop of the 6th series; actually, they created it from the ground rolled wire production. The company has opened the financing of the design and research work. Now they have completed geological exploration for land testing, and analyze the offers of equipment suppliers. The creation of the shops for production of items with high added value will give an opportunity to make more expensive and in demand products and improve the competitiveness. Secondly, in full accordance with the agreement, for the reduction of expenses they started remove from operation most of the unprofitable and ecologically imperfect capacities of the third and fourth corpuses.
