Participants of South Stream don’t want to sat goodbye to it
Today the EU will formally discuss their response to Russia's decision to abandon the building of the South Stream gas pipeline for the first time. According to sources of the Kommersant and analysts, the sharp change of the European Commission’s position, the pressure from which the project was mainly stopped, is extremely unlikely, despite requests from Bulgaria and Hungary, to which the cancellation of the project hit the most. But the victims may try to get additional preferences under the intra-European projects.
Today, a meeting of Energy Ministers of the EU countries that still consider themselves as members of the South Stream project will take place. Representatives of Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Italy and Greece, led by the European Commission’s deputy head on the creation of an energy alliance Maros Shevchovich will discuss how to respond to the sudden announcement of the project's cancellation, which came from the mouth of Vladimir Putin last week. The first reaction of the Europeans was confusion, many interlocutors of the Kommersant thought that Gazprom was bluffing, especially given the 5 billion euro, already spent on the project. On the eve of the meeting that the European Commission didn’t cancel indicatively, each country formed its stance.
