Second branch of Nord Stream causes problems for some EU members

As the Kommersant predicted, the project of the Nord Stream gas pipeline-2 has split the previously single European position on the gas tranist via the Ukraine. Slovakia and Poland strongly oppose the construction of a new pipeline to bypass the Ukraine. The Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico called the actions of the Western European gas companies, that have signed the project, "a betrayal" and promised to put the matter before the Council of EU leaders.

The signing of the shareholders agreement for Nord Stream gas pipeline-2 has caused, as the Kommersant predicted on September 7th, an overreaction of the eastern EU countries. Yesterday the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico said that "Western European gas companies (signed the agreement on Nord Stream-2), which operate on the territory of countries- the EU members,have betrayed the other European countries, including Slovakia". Not mincing his words, the official recalled that in recent years, the EU countries talked a lot that it’s necessary to keep the transit of gas through the Ukraine, and then suddenly the Nord Stream-2 pipeline came, which allows them to bypass the same Ukraine. "They just make us look idiots," - Mr. Fico summed up, meant a number of his colleagues in the EU. The Prime Minister stressed that due to the construction of Nord Stream-2 Slovakia could lose hundreds of millions of euros of transit fees per year. "I will raise this issue at the meeting of the European Council," - promised the official.
