UC Rusal has shut down aluminium rod production in the Ukraine

UC Rusal has terminated the output of the aluminium rod at the Zaporozhie aluminium plant.

The leading aluminium producer UC Rusal has terminated the aluminium rod production in the Ukraine.

The production at the Zaporozhie aluminium plant was shutdown 2 months earlier than had been planned when Rusal received a report of worthiness of rod production at this plant. Russia decided that the Zaporozhie plant is an extra part in the production process and shut down the furnaces.

160 workers of the Zaporozhie plant were fired – out of 230 workers of rod production only 70 will stay to maintain the frozen production complex, storehouses and administrative premises.

The Zaporozhie aluminium plant is the only primary aluminium producer in the Ukraine.

Formally the Zaporozhie aluminium plant is divided into 2 plants – the Zaporozhie aluminium plant itself and a new company “Aluminium rod of Zaporozhie” which in fact won’t produce aluminium products.

“In fact this is a structure which will receive the Russian rod, change tags and send it to consumers. Our rod doesn’t suit the electric technical customers, but it is used at the metallurgical plants as a deoxidizing unit, and they will purchase it”, the interlocutor of the agency said.

The Supreme Economic Court of the Ukraine appointed for October 28th the consideration of the case on the return to the Ukraine of 68.01% of shares of PJSC Zaporozhie aluminium plant which was initiated by the General Prosecutor’s Office in 2012.
