Estonia might again refuse to participate in Nord Stream

Estonia, that has received another request from Nord Stream for the research work in their territorial waters, might again refuse to participate in the Nord Stream.

The advisor of Nord Stream in the Baltic countries, R. Baumanis, said that the possibility of the gas pipeline’s expansion is being considered by the request of the company’s shareholders.Currently experts work out the technical and economic assessment of the project, the final decision is planned to be made at the end of the year.

In 2007, Estonia actively stood against the construction of the gas pipeline and rejected the request. The Parliament of Estonia accepted the request of the Baltic Sea countries not to permit the construction of the pipeline in their waters.

The Prime Minister of Estonia, chairman of the ruling Reformist party, A. Ansip, said on Thursday that Estonia has no grounds to change the decision already made.

I can’t see any significant changes. So I can’t understand why the Government should change their already existing point of view. But I have no reasons to hurry up and guess what the Government might answer, Mr. Ansip said.

The IRL party which is also in the structure of the ruling coalition doesn’t plan to change its opinion as well.

In 2007 the Government answered in the negative but this opinion based on the analysis. To change the point of view very serious grounds are needed. I don’t think it is necessary and rational to make concessions in favor of the possible and relative trade and monetary interest on the account of safety and ecology, the Minister of Defense, chairman of IRL, U. Reinsalu said.

The Nord stream gas pipeline is a route pipeline directly connecting Russia and Germany. The target markets for Nord stream are Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Denmark and other countries.

The gas pipeline consists of 2 branches 1.224 thousand km each with the throughput capacity of 27.5 bln cubic meters of gas a year each. 2 branches of the gas pipeline go by the bottom of the Baltic Sea from the Portovaya Bay near Vyborg (the Leningrad region, Russia) to the coast of Germany near Greiswald.

The gas transport company Nord Stream AG (Switzerland) was founded for the planning, construction, holding, financing and operation of the gas pipeline.

The major shareholder is Gazprom OAO which holds 51%, the leading German energy concerns Wintershall Holding GmbH and E.ON Ruhrgas -15.5% each, GDF Suez and N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie -9% each.
