Russia continues developing design of new nuclear icebreaker “Leader” despite sanctions

This was reported by the deputy general director of Atomflot S. Golovin during the 2rd Arctic Investment Summit.

The 2nd International Investment Arctic Summit of Development "Nanotechnology, the military-industrial complex, investment and the Arctic, as a national idea" took place in Moscow on February 24 2015.

Nuclear icebreaker "Leader" of LC-110YA series will surpass even icebreakers LK-60 of the latest generation, intended for Yamal fields.

Power of leader is 110 MW, and it will be able to overcome ice with thickness of 4.5 meters, which will make the navigation on the Northern Sea Route year-round.

Hull beam of the icebreaker will be about 50 meters, which will enable to use it for convoying large tankers.

For comparison, nuclear icebreaker “Arktika” of the LK-60 series, which is now being built, will have capacity of 60 MW and will be able to overcome the solid ice with thickness of 3 meters.
