Gas optimism of the Ukraine

President of the Ukraine Pyotr Poroshenko, spoken at the economic forum in Davos, said the loss of Ukrainian natural gas market by Russia and expressed confidence that in two years the Ukraine would be able to do without Russian gas. "We are seriously reducing gas consumption. We have reduced the consumption of from 70 billion (cubic meters per year) to 40, and I am sure that we will ensure our independence from Russia in two years," - he said.

The statement affects both its categorically and unrestrained optimism as the Ukraine intends to provide its energy independence from Russian gas through its reverse supplies from neighboring countries in Europe and shale gas. But so-called reverse gas is almost the same Russian gas, but overbought from European companies. As for shale gas, its commercial production isn’t even in sight either in the European Union, or, especially, in the Ukraine itself not only in the next two years, but in the foreseeable future.

The country now lives by saving the Russian gas, consumption of gas from storages and reverse supply from the EU. According to the National operator of pipelines, in 2014, the Ukraine reduced imports of Russian gas by 44% to 14.5 billion cubic meters. At the same time, the Ukraine imported 5.1 billion cubic meters of gas from Europe, increased the amount by 3 billion cubic meters as compared with 2013.
