The European Commission to take decision on “Nord Stream-2” soon

The European Commission will take decision on the construction of “Nord Stream-2” gas pipeline from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea in one of these days. Vice-chairman of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič stated, “Kommersant” reports.

Russia thinks the Third Energy Package of the EU is unfair

Russia considers the EU’s Third Energy Package unfair, said the Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. According to him, it prevents some countries and helps others, so we can’t talk about its justice.
The question of the European Energy Package was raised in connection with the Nord Stream-2 project in the interview, given by the Prime Minister to the German edition Handelsblatt on the eve of his visit to Germany. Dmitry Medvedev acknowledged that many European leaders wouldn’t agree with him, but they have their own interest.

Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the European Union: The terms of the Third Energy Package are irrelevant to the “Nord Stream-2”

“Nord Stream-2” gas pipeline project, which has no surface part on the territory of the European Union (EU), should not be subject to the EU's Third Energy Package. This was stated by Russia's permanent representative to the EU V.Chizhov.

Dialogue on “Nord Stream-2” should start over, EC

The European Commission appeals for the parties involved to start over the discussion of the construction of “Nord Stream-2” gas pipeline.
It is based on the need to assess reasonability of gas pipeline construction, vice-president of the European Commission M. Šefčovič stated.

EC does not decide on the legal aspects of "Nord Stream-2".

The European Commission has not yet decided on the legal aspects of the "North Stream-2" project, its legal analysis continues, the European Commission Vice President on Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič informs.
"It's pretty clear that we have a number of concerns on "Nord Stream-2", as this project does not meet the objectives of the strategy for the creation of energy union (in the EU - ed.). In particular, what this project will mean for energy security, diversification, future gas architecture in Europe and the functioning of the energy market", - he stated.

The EU tries to play politics with Nord Stream 2

Last week we were able to observe the beginning of the second stage of the confrontation around the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. The first stage, which started in the autumn of 2015, contained vivid statements of politicians from the Eastern Europe. They did not hesitate to call the pipeline a betrayal from the Western partners in the EU and repeated the thesis about the growing dependence on Russian gas. The head of the Council of Europe and the former Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk declared openly that he considered Nord Stream 2 project dangerous, which was undermining, threatening and so on. But those were just words, and now it came to certain actions.

Nord Stream-2 may face problems

According to the European Commission, the underwater part of the Nord Stream-2 main gas pipeline can get under the restrictions of the Third Energy Package of the EU.
According to the EC's Directorate for Energy, the underwater part of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline, which should pass under the Baltic Sea, is subject to EU law, not only to the jurisdiction of four countries: Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry assures that the gas pipeline will increase the EU’s energy security.

Vienna waits for the lifting of sanctions against Russia

On Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economy, Science and Research of Austria Reinhold Mitterlehner has concluded a two-day visit to Moscow, during which he met with the Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and attended a meeting of the bilateral intergovernmental commission. This Austrian guest showed a much more friendly attitude toward Moscow than most of his European counterparts. So during public appearances, he complained that his country can’t unilaterally lift the sanctions from Russia and recalled the role of Kiev in the implementation of the Minsk agreements on Donbas. And during a closed conversation with the Russian Prime Minister Reinhold Mitterlehner, according to the Kommersant’s information, acknowledged that the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project was prevented by "political views" of a number of EU countries, but assured that Austria supported this initiative.
The negotiations of Dmitry Medvedev and Reinhold Mitterlehner were held in the suburban residence of the Russian Prime Minister "Gorki" on Wednesday. Recalled abbout the bilateral trade turnover drops (in January-November 2015, the volume of the trade declined by a quarter and amounted to $2.878 billion), Dmitry Medvedev said that "Russia and Austria are partners" and "in the current very difficult economic situation" Moscow hopes not to lose the established communication.

Poland’s Prime Minister associates Nord Stream-2 with the geopolitics of Russia

The Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlow called the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline a Russian geopolitical project. According to her, the project "aims mainly geopolitical rather than economic objectives". She said this, asked of whether a gas pipeline, construction of which Poland was discussing with Norway, a competitor of Nord Stream, the RBC reports.
